On Sunday, April 3, 2016 I was honored to receive the Civics Soldier Award from Jersey City based Civics for the Emerging Activist, founded and run by Tai Williams, Jersey City activist, author, poet, entrepreneur and a force to be reckoned with.
 | Celebrating 4 years of active Civics Activism, the focus was on being a community activist and during this important election year, the ability, right and privilege of voting and having your voice heard were at the forefront of most minds. Having been in the first Civics class that Tai offered four years ago, I was amazed at the growth I saw around me. This is a moment that is very much needed in our community. |
There were several awards handed out. Lynda Weinstein recieved the Lifetime Activist Award. Her work dates back to the 1980s in Hoboken. Student of the year was awarded to Jessica Abdelnabbi.
I was honored to be selected for the Civic Soldier Award, along with my fellow honorees Nicholas Ciavatta and Jennifer Watterman.
It was beautiful to see my fellow community activists and artists be acknowledged for all of the hard work, energy, effort and dedication that they each put into uplifting Jersey City's community

| This year's graduates are Jessica Abdelnabi and Craig Howard. So you see, the work never ends. Activism never stops. It's in our blood as artists and community leaders. I give thanks for Tai and her determination to help others make a difference. She asked me to talk about Supporting local artists through grassroots efforts. I must have written and re-written those words a dozen times before I spoke them. I was so inspired by the strength and energy of those around me that I could barely contain myself.  | My introduction to Jersey City was through the underground Art scene. The Waterbug Hotel was the epitome of the underground. I fell in love instantly. I wanted to get involved, learn more, become part of the thriving Artist community. And I did. I moved to Jersey City because of it. I became part of the Renaissance that brought the underground Artists to the center for a cultural love fest. As with everything, change remains constant. Some of those changes turned opportunity into inconvenience, resulting in most of the artistic outlets drying up, in turn creating new opportunities - an evolution in the Artist. The importance of supporting opportunities for home grown artists cannot be forgotten. The artistic voice cannot be silenced. When one connects with another there will always be a community movement. Jersey City Artists are resilient and generous. In continuing development through change we build up one another, support the beautiful things life has to offer. All Art is beautiful. This, right here, is a community of artists. We support a movement by being present, spreading the word, investing in one another. Beyond these doors support of our community opens opportunity for new voices to be heard, strengthen voices that carry on the messages of Art and Community as pillars of society. Supporting our Artists makes us each a patron of the Arts, brings out our own artistic endeavors and enhances our community on an economic level. Each artist is an entrepreneur, an independent business that gives back to the community economically by investing in other artists, venues and local businesses. As an artist who found my voice in Jersey City, my call to action is to do what I can to strengthen my fellow artists. As an activist, my call to action is in passing that message on and working with local businesses, create collaborations to keep the movement going an strengthening the pillar that is our Artistic community. We are the community we create. |
Caporale Massimiliano has been a consistent rising star since he appeared in the Afro House scene. With releases on such labels as Nylon Trax, Cover Music, Irma Rec, House Tribe Rec, Cabana Records, Forever Ride, Muted Trax, MoBlack and Vida Records he has a knack for creating what’s needed to fill the sound waves with the secret ingredient of ethereal sensuality. His latest offering is no different.
Usually the lone wolf when releasing music, Massimiliano’s latest, M. Caporale & Friends, due to be released on MoBlack Records exclusively on Traxsource November 20, 2015 and worldwide December 20, 2015, is a collaboration of some of the most unique production voices one can experience.
M. Caporale & Friends (Vol 1) brings production new comer, Adam Gibbons (Boston) into the spotlight with “Truth Sayer”. This is Adam Gibbons second released production collaboration and it’s a strong, rich original undertaking that fuses an Afro House base line with funk and elements of the Caribbean – it’s kinetic and hypnotic to the dancer. “Truth Sayer” is designed to keep you grounded while lifting you to unexpected heights.
The second delight came in the form of “Rain” with Montreal born Myles Bigelow. Hardly new to the music scene, the collaboration of these two is a deeply sensual movement of the spirit that doesn’t play it safe. Percussions coupled with the weaving of distinctive rhythms and drops reach deep inside to create the essence of dancing in the rain.
Massimiliano has managed to bring attention to a medium within Afro House that has largely been overlooked. The texture of Middle Eastern influences is clear in his collaboration with Morocco born Cee Elassad. “Arabic Bird” is a beautifully meditative production that stays in the air long after the last “chirp” is felt.
M. Caporale & Friends makes a stop in Spain bringing D’Oke on board with “Olo-Du-Mare”. This chant laden Deep Afro joint is a fitting collaboration between two producers that pour their experience and passion into what they love.
The anticipation of M Caporale & Friends Vol 1 is palpable. This is a release that lovers of music will appreciate for a long time and over and over again.

In this life we come across many people. Some walk alongside us on our path to the next and the next. Some walk with us and share experiences until the next. There are the rare few who, while making their own path, intertwine theirs with ours.
As a new year begins, I am reminded of that. Paths have ended, new ones have begun to show themselves, with known and new adventurers.
These experiences affect us, there's no denying that. To the extent that they affect us determines how important they are to us.
In living what I love - Poetry and Music - I have been fortunate enough to build relationships across the world and with spirits from all walks of life. I love diversity and live diversity.
One such experience is a project that I was asked to take part in recently. I don't recall how we met, but Mark Mendoza is not only a friend. He has been one of those people whose adventures have intertwined with mine.
His experience in Music extends quite a way back. I pulled the following bio from his Resident Advisor Profile:
"As a Music Business & Technology major at New York University, Mark attained an internship and was subsequently hired at Jane Brinton and Duffy Macri's famed management firm, "This Beats Workin'. By 1991, Mark secured an A&R position for the hypnotic, jazzy dance label Kaleidiascope Records, located in Newark, NJ. Under Mark's tenure, he brought some of the hottest dance music artists to the label such as Ce Ce Rogers, Jovonn and Jephté Guillaume. Always the "forward thinker," he used this opportunity to launch his production company, "280 West Productions", named after Route 280, a main highway that cuts through Essex County… and where most of his musical ideas would originate while driving home from work, as well as some of NY/NJ’s hottest clubs! Under this moniker, Mark churned out several smash hits: "Love's Masquerade" with Diamond Temple, "Scattered Dreams" with Kenny Bobien, "Got Me Groovin" with Sha'ron and the frenetic instrumental goodie, "The Dip".
He later joined forces with one of NJ's innovative DJs, the legendary Hippie Torrales (Club Zanzibar/Dock's). Together they formed MenTor Productions (synchronization of the first three letters of their surnames). Under this tight-knit production outfit came several original projects and countless remixes such as: Rosie Gaines - "I Want U" and "Closer Than Close" (over a million copies sold) and Kimara Lovelace - "Circles" (#1 Billboard Dance Chart) along with remix work for Jocelyn Brown, Evelyn "Champagne" King and Lisa Stansfield among others.
Mark later went on to partner at Phuture Sole Recordings and put out some soulful gems, including “My Words” (Jon Pierce) and “Don’t” (Monday Michiru). In addition to A&R duties, Mark continued work in the studio with his remixes of the label's first 2 singles and original productions with Diamond Temple: "Fly" and "I Never Knew" featuring the backing vocals of Ray, Goodman & Brown. He has now moved on and formed his own business under his production name “280 West”. "
In 2005 he was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer and went through the regiment of chemo, surgery and recovery. A couple of years ago he made the decision to go back to school and complete his degree in music. Inspired by fellow DJ & producer, cuñao Adam Cruz' jump back in to complete his education, Mark threw himself wholeheartedly into this milestone. On December 4, 2014 he presented his final project for graduation.
He asked me to be part of that. Humbled that he considered me part of his journey I immediately said "Yes". His fiancée and my friend, Flora Cruz, partnered with Mark to share the story of another part of this journey, love and marriage.
When we first discussed this collaboration, Mark explained how he came about the music and what his vision was for the final product. A week or two in, the view point altered to something much more personal.
Mark, familiar with my advocacy on Cancer awareness and knowledge, asked that the piece relate to his winning battle against this "merciless contriver"
His story, as each spirit who fights for life, is an incredible testament to resilience, belief and a strong sense of LIVING.
Here is one piece of the result of his story and passion.

On October 30, 2014 I had the chance to be on the receiving end of an interview. DJ Midas Retouch (PhillyNites Radio) and I spent some time chatting. Midas did a beautiful job. I felt comfortable (maybe too comfortable) during the interview. I could have spend hours speaking with him.
Although I'm not a shy person (I heard the "Ya think?!" LOL), I prefer talking about the incredible people in this business we all love so much, the passion and the vision that I learn from on a daily basis being surrounded by giving, loving spirits who breathe to share their ART!

 | Tonight I had the opportunity to get "back to my roots". When I started on this journey of sharing words with others, it was right here in JerseyCity. Even after all this time I still get nervous. When I get so nervous my knees shake I go to the first poem I memorized, Obituary. There's something comforting in knowing that you KNOW something so well you could do it in your sleep. I still rehearse Obituary and it's still different every time. It's poetry. Inspired by one thing, impassioned by another, touching memories and creating new ones So there was no music, no dancing. There was just the word, the art - POETRY New faces. Eager to have their voices heard, words accepted and applauded. What a beautiful sight!! I am truly excited to be performing in Philly for David Vargas' birthday celebration. To be able to share this event with him and perform with Venus, Beloved, Mark Francis and Jimmy Lopez is truly a fantastic way to round out the year! Who's up for cheese steaks?
Soul Medic and i are excited to have world renowned poet, spoken word artist and advocate on the third edition of Just ADD Sound this Thursday, November 20, 2014. I've had the honor of performing live with Tantra recently at the Greenfield Annual Word Festival in addition to celebrating a year with Raw Honey Poets on the "Happy" Project available on Honeycomb Music. The entire album is available for free download.
Although I was familiar with Tantra's work, her 2013 collaboration, African Mermaid, with DJeff for his Soldier Ascension album (Tribe Records) brought her range and artistry to the forefront.

Joining us in the studio is global artist/percussionist Jimmy Lopez. A Specialist in world percussion instruments, combining global ethnic playing techniques along with his diverse drum & percussion palette, which has led him to be the percussionist of choice for many artists, & has collaborated & toured regularly with popular musicians & groups. When not traveling, Jimmy is also a music educator in public schools for children & also generously shares his knowledge with fellow musicians.
I've known Jimmy for a few years, but only recently began working with him on live radio shows and live performances such as Soulful Cypher presents House on the Hudson (Jersey City NJ). It's such a pleasure and honor to work with this incredible spirit
